Starting a YouTube channel can be very daunting for many 💖💖
Especially when you are not sure how to start. You may be thinking… Have I got the right camera? What editing software do I use? How do I learn these things? When can I make time to film?
There is a lot of work that goes into filming a YouTube video. First and foremost you need to have an idea of what to film (making sure it is something you enjoy) 😊😊
You then need to decide where you are going to film. It has to be in a room or area that is quiet enough, so that you can focus and your audience is not distracted by any background noise.
Not only do you have to limit the background noise. You must make sure you have good lighting. Natural lighting works best for me. I usually sit in front of a window for my makeup and art tutorials.
Now you need to set up your equipment to Film. Your Camera can be a point and shoot type of camera, DSLR or you may be starting out with your mobile phone (which is fine to use, I still use mine for vlogs, intros for my makeup tutorials and sit down talks).
Once you have set up your equipment you need to prepare yourself mentally to film. Whether that be taking some deep breaths, repeating affirmations or talking out loud. If it helps, do a practice video and play it back to see how you are going.
A good way to think about it is to feel as though the video will never be seen (like you will not upload it and it is just for you), that way you will feel less pressured and your nerves will calm a bit.
You want to be present your natural unique self, as that is going to be what makes your channel different and it will keep you passionate about filming.
Once you have finished recording you need to take a photo to be your Thumbnail (it is the photo that appears on YouTube that people click on to go to your video). You can always choose to screenshot a scene from your video if you prefer.
After taking your Thumbnail photo you need to edit your video. You can do this by downloading software. If you have a Mac computer or laptop you can download iMovie as it is free and if your computer runs on Microsoft you can search in the Microsoft store for editing programs.
The editing software I use is Adobe Premiere Elements 2018, I got it as a package that include Photoshop. You can also pay for a month subscription with Adobe to have access to many of their types of software online.
I chose to purchase Adobe Premiere Elements 2018 as I like having software that I can use offline and do not have to continue paying. It works very well and has plenty of features. I love it!
You can look online for tutorials on whatever type of software you choose to use. That’s the thing, when you start a YouTube channel, you will find you will be constantly learning new things and researching a lot. It is all part of the journey.
So once you have completed editing your video, you are going to have to choose a photo to edit and make a Thumbnail (as I mentioned you can choose to use a screenshot from your video if you like).
You can edit your Thumbnail in Adobe Photoshop or if you do not have that kind of software just yet, I will let you know of another way. As long as you have access to a computer/laptop that has Microsoft Windows, you can use both MS Word and Paint together to create a Thumbnail.
Basically copy and paste whatever photo you want to use into a MS Word document. Have Paint open, resize the canvas in Paint to 1280 px W x 720 px H. Make the photo bigger in MS Word, copy the photo and paste into Paint.
It may take you many times to do this and get the right size. The reason why you cannot copy and paste the photo itself directly to Paint is that it will be huge, and if you resize it in Paint it is tricky to keep the photo proportional and it can look pixellated. You can add font and shapes if you want to in Paint by using the tools.
Once your Thumbnail is done, it is time to upload the video (or you can have it uploading while editing your Thumbnail, it is up to you). Log into your YouTube account and click on upload. You can set it to Private and then manually make public when you feel ready to or you can Schedule a specific time for it to go public on its own.
I always Schedule mine for the same day, everyday, unless it is a very long video – I may have to manually release it later to be public. Whatever you do, do not select Unlisted as that option still makes the video public but only those who know the url link can access it, not the general public. If you are comfortable you can always make your video Public straight away.
While uploading you need to type in the Title of your video (I think it is a good thing to type in your channel name at the end of the title, so that people who come across your video will have more of a chance to remember your channel name).
Now write a clear description of what the video is about and most importantly credit any music you have included in your video. I like to use Royalty-free music by Kevin MacLeod. He has a great range of different genres and they are free to use, you just need to copy and paste the credit that you will find beside each of the music pieces.
Tags are important to add as they help people find your videos when they search for a particular topic. You can add up to 30 tags (if you add above this, your video may not appear as much, as this can be considered spam – just like in Instagram).
You can have a look at my YouTube channel and click on any video and see the layout of my description for the video. I always include a link to the previous video, a brief paragraph to do with the video, my social media links, what is included in the video (if showing/working with products), the equipment I have used, credit for any music, and if it is or not a sponsored video.
