Sponsored content is a great way for businesses and content creators (influencers) to collaborate, sharing products or services to the public.
Usually a business will approach a content creator to do a sponsored post, either directly to their social media through private messaging or by email.
Of course, not all requests are going to be from a real company (that’s why the spam tab exists in email). Which is a scary thing, especially since some may slip through to your inbox.
You need to learn to identify which emails are from existing businesses. A great place to start is by reading the email. Look for spelling errors, ask yourself: ‘Does this sound professional?’, and then search for the company online.
These are just tips to help you though, so be mindful that at the end of the day, it all comes down to your judgement to spot what is a scam and what is not. It’s a must to be wary!
Now, when accepting sponsored requests, you must disclose on the produced content that it is sponsored. As the FTC mentions (you can read the legal guidelines here), a sponsored post must be addressed as sponsored. It is misleading to do otherwise.
The correct way to show content is sponsored is to address it in the sponsored video and place a hashtag ‘sponsored’ in the first line of the description area. This is the same for a blog or social media post.
I feel that sponsored videos and posts are great, as long as the influencer truly believes in the product or service they are promoting, and that it in lines with their values.
I myself have received many requests to do sponsored posts and have accepted two, as I only like to support businesses that have products or services that I believe in. For example, I love animals so I only work with cruelty-free companies.
It is important to stay true to yourself and not support something just because it pays well. You have to look at the bigger picture and understand that if you say that a product is really good when it is not, people will lose trust in you.
I enjoy supporting companies that I believe in. Having influencers is a great way for businesses to market their products, especially for small businesses just starting out and wanting to get some feedback on what they have to offer customers.
We are all consumers, so it is helpful having someone test out a product or service and promote it, just as long as they are honest with their thoughts and know that it offers value to those who trust them.
I hope you found this post helpful. Be sure to watch the video and let me know your thoughts. This is a topic I have been wanting to post about for some time. It’s good to know even if you are not a content creator.
Always remember to never go off one person’s opinion when it comes to considering paying for a product or service. Read many reviews to ensure you are getting what you want.
Thank you so much for reading and watching. Have a great day!
